I was a first year pupil in September 1971, but was only there
for just over a term before Dom Mintoff asked us (not too
kindly) to leave! I think that was January 1972, although my dad

Thank you Ben. That pic is on page 4 of Then & Now.
Album numbers can be confusing as they keep changing as more are
added.
Better to give the pid number if you can find it in the URL or
File Information, (in this case - displayimage.php?pid=2836) or
just the Title which can then be found by the Search button.

Not sure. It will still exist according to drawings, but this is
all I can find on the subject - "The Ditch area underneath the
entrance to City Gate, dug out of live rock as a defensive
measure and which today is currently being used as an informal
car park will include landscaping works for recreational
purposes and an extension to the railway via duct that had been
added in 1898 using masonry pilasters and beams. Access from the
ditch to the railway viaduct will be restored by means of a
staircase and a lift."

I WAS paying attention but the work set was not very well
explained by the teacher. If you type war or wartime into search
you don't get a thumbnail of Bill Rickard's BBC page like wot
you do with the other two. So unless you happen to know he's
hiding in the wartime archive you will be lucky to spot him.
Even if you knew his name, as the search won't find him. So a
similar link would be good.
To Sheila M - not sure exactly which crest it was that went
astray, it was a shield or plaque of some sort, never
identified. Wouldn't say Marc lost it exactly - it went missing
during his absence on a training course.

To David Arnold and Sheila Macdonald - there is another Ta'Xbiex
veteran on this site - Eric Hartley has put a couple of pics on
(use search button and type his name). Another one, Anthony
Clover, is a correspondent of mine but hasn't registered here
yet. There are some stories by wartime pupils Paul Fuller and
Margaret Staples - type BBC into the search button on the
left-hand menu and follow the coloured links under their photos.
When on that BBC site also search for Bill Rickard (thanks to
Liz) (how about a link to that please, Prefect?). And Peter
Prictoe was at Verdala in the 30s - see his memories at
searchmalta dot com / ezine / pprictoe . All a bit complicated,
but heck - no problem for TH pupils!

Yes Sheila, and regular coach trips normally to ancient
monuments, armier bay, ghajn tuffeha and (always?) dingli
heights. (Very few people owned cars back then). The party were
always in good singing form en route, adult throats being well
lubricated with blue label. Boxing day "Funny dress football
match" was always a winner with many players stretchered off for
rough treatment. You're so right, the regt was like a large
family in those days. Children's Xmas parties were always fab.

Yes Sheila, they were happy days - before and after the siege
and bombing. Bill was always good for a biscuit or cake in my
infancy and a bottle of Blue Label in my teens (drank on the
veranda of the Sgts Mess).
Did you ever go skating at Rocky Vale or spend long hours
nursing a drink on the "Chalet"? Our gang played hockey on
skates at Rocky, sometimes monopolising the courts all
afternoon. In later years I preferred their evening dances.

Re the dapper four: Robin Bowes - alas no longer with us, Bob

There were other gigs at which we performed either as a quartet

On one occasion we were auditioned at BBC Radio Centre, but it
came to naught.
On another occasion in Plymouth in 1961, Robin & I played as a
duo!
If anyone has any photos, a copy/ scan of them would be much

Anyone living at Marshall Court 1950 to 52 will remember Mrs Wilson playing
“Dream of Olwen” on her Grand Piano of an evening. If you were there at that
time please send an email to malshy@ayhoo.com. Three lads of that time are in
contact. Remarkably I am now in touch with 5 others from those years.

get them from Grahame Cain who has them on a disc.

Hi Kathy - I am he. Your name rings a faint bell - which classes were you in and
which years (if you can recall). I was in first year (form teacher Mr Devine)
1963-4 until L6th 1968-9. Second year FT was Mr Pappin, 3rd Edgar Battye, 4th Mr
Barraclough, 5th Bill Alexander - not that we saw them much apart from
registration / tellings-off (and their subject lessons of course).
ps Yes Prefect I will remember - is that the only one you need now?

I stumbled upon this site and am fascinated to see the pictures. I was in Malta
for about a year (1950/51) when my father (Lt Com John Blake) was navigating
officer on HMS Liverpool. I well recall a party for the crew's children on
board. It's also nice to see the pic of HMS Decoy, on which I served briefly at
Plymouth when in the CCF at the King's School, Canterbury. A lasting memory of
my time there is of Sleima Creek full of frigates and destroyers. I have several
photos of HMS Liverpool in the Grand Harbour (including some of the party) if of
use - though I'd have to scan them first.

much about being at Tal handaq, though I remember the beach of an afternoon and
doing some high cliff diving from time to time - oh and the uniform. Fav teacher
was Mr Alexander, the English teacher, and I do remember going on the cruise
ships. Think I was there 67/68 ish.
Anyway a nice site and it took me back for a while. Nice to see it here. Thanks

Hi
I was at TH from Sep 1974 to Jul 1977 and absolutely loved my time there. My
older sister, Katrina, was there too but only until July of 76. We lived at
Mosta and got the no. 71 bus, I think, from the Tip Top on the main road through
the town.
When the time came to return to the UK, I was really sad to leave the school
that I enjoyed so very much. Life after that just wasn't the same. :-(
Names that I remember are Denise Paul (sister of Keith), Karen & Heather McKay,
Richard 'Hedgehog' Howarth (and his siblings Kathryn, Michael? and James, I
think), Dawn Ramsay, Joanne Hill, Jacquie Hall, Julie Stagg & Johanna Hills.
I was the quiet one - honest! ;-)

I have found my teacher's name though! My father was an officer in the Royal
Navy based at Bighi & Mtarfa. His name was Arthur & my mother's name Beaulah. We
lived in several places including Mtarfa, Kalkara & Birkirkara. My favourite
special place in the world is still Mdina. I would love to hear from anyone who

was an author in your family. As for names, there were up to 1000 there at any

surprising you don't know them all. You can get the full list of those in touch

Thanks for your comments. The picture size is not always a matter of my choice.
The size limits I have chosen are 1024 x 1024 with a file size limit of 250 KB.
This will produce a near full screen clear image. Limitations are necessary as
space costs money and I fund this site from my pension!
Any photos posted by me are increased to as near these limits as possible whilst
retaining acceptable quality. However many images submitted by members do not
reach these standards often because the scanning from poor quality original
prints just wasn't of sufficiently high resolution. Nevertheless they are
welcome additions to our collective nostalgia. They are intended purely for
viewing, not printing. Enjoy.
Further contributions of whatever quality will of course be welcome.

However I do think it is a great shame that you have chosen to display the many
interesting pictures that you have here at such a small size. With many of the
pictures shown at around 625x394 and the very largest at about 1024x800 it is
impossible to appreciate them fully.

assembly where Maestro couldn't see them not singing.

Found the site quite by accident whilst researching Malta History when the Tal
Handak School popped up in the Religious Statues page?? I was in Malta
1956-1959, lived in St Julians Bay and spent some leasure time at Rockyvale and
with the First Pembroke Scout troop at St Andrews. It was very pleaseing to see
so many Names amongst the Photo Gallery that I knew.

Went to Malta in 1957 with Mum, 3 bros and my sister. Dad had gone ahead,
stationed at St Georges Barracks. Started at Tal handak in 1BM in 57. Ist in
class at that age of 11. Went on through 2A to 4A. Believe I was in Stephenson,
green I think. Great times at the school club in Valletta on sat night. Gone the
cane for pinching pencils, loved Audrey Potts who tore up the valentine Card I
sent her. Believe Amanda Beale was also in my 3A class. Remember cross country
runs in the valley.Everything happened to me those 5 years in my life
salutations

I first went to Malta in 1948 - I'm sure you all remember 1948 - and after a
short while at Tal Handaq, Verdala was opened and I went there. I hated the
school, the teachers and all the other kids but apart from that it was quite
enjoyable.
Went back to Portsmouth, took the eleven plus and passed but as I hadn't made up
my mind what I was going to do when/if I grew up I chose to go to the Portsmouth
Technical School because I had cousins there. I hated the school, the teachers
and the other kids but apart from that....Then in 1956 my Dad got posted back to
Malta where I went to Tal Handaq and had a wonderful time. Left in 1959 and it's
been pretty much downhill ever since. What about you?

Hi Dave. I've just come across this website - I guess I should have done a Tal
Handaq search years ago.
It would be great to hear from you and get your direct E-mail address.

To Letitia Duke - just seen yr message of 29 August. I think the Scot with the
kilt was Jock (David) Norris who was going out with Debby Bradley - another
oilfield "yank" (see Nelle Grace's recent pics). I have just got back from Malta
where myself, Jock, Phil Woodcock, and Chris Harrison (all same age) had a Cisk
Reunion with a few others of different eras. We had a great a trip to the school
with demolition imminent - a few souvenirs were obtained ! (With permission of
course).
I can put you in touch with Debby, Jock or the others. They are both on Facebook
too.

So I'm afraid I will have to ask you to register again. It only takes a couple

Hello again Valerie. Jane Banks (Stubbs) thinks her family knew yours in the
50s. There is a new pic in the 50s album. If you would like to reply you can
register in the Gallery or I can put you in touch by email.

enjoyed site. Heather Marriot shared a double desk with me in 1952-3. Recognised
many of the buldings. My brother David Tucker is on a pic by Jenny Churcher
dated 1954 - wrong date we left in 1953.

For the Captain of Hawkins Junior Hockey Team

The 63 Magazine is now on the site. This time
they managed to spell both your names wrongly in
one place! However I have added a correction.

There must be many interesting stories among former RN School
pupils - perhaps not all as dramatic as that one! Your unusual
childhoods produced an enterprising lot!
Sorry about the 'spots' instead of 'dots' in that last message -
senior moments!!

That worked. Quite a story!
