The guestbook Ross Miller - 2008-04-09 09:31:21 "In the Mixed section...Geraint Xmas 1982,methinks ? Cowan is Bob Cowan" Christopher J. Love - 2008-04-08 14:21:07 Hello Shipmates, Dave Smith - 2008-04-04 16:05:53 Could be Ray Gollop possibly visiting from Fort Charlotte which was always on berthed in the opposite corner of Stores Basin. Webmaster - 2008-04-04 10:13:32 Could be Byron, there isnt much to go on,but that would give us two Captains on one ship? Byron Jones - 2008-04-03 22:42:06 In the Mixed section Gold Ranger - could Tony Mitchell? be Ray Gallop? Bev Hatch - 2008-03-30 07:00:54 For Colin Evans. Colin Evans - 2008-03-29 23:36:28 In the unnamed section photo labelled "Xmas". Webmaster - 2008-03-24 14:12:07 Thanks John. Is he the one in the front row, between Capt & Choff, or the one behind waving? John Caruana - 2008-03-23 22:15:22 Blue Ranger Suez - Ken Anderson 3EO - 3rd from left - Jioed him in Malta 1958 Webmaster - 2008-03-23 12:10:35 Hello Colin, Colin Smith - 2008-03-22 07:58:25 Correction to my last post..it was Retainer I served on as 4th Mate not Regent... a "senior" moment! Colin Smith - 2008-03-22 07:54:48 Happy Easter. I was on Wave Ruler as 1st Trip Cadet in 1966, joined
in South Shields in Refit and then we went to Malta Station via work up
at Portland. I was 4th Mate on wave Ruler in I think 1970 on her last
trip before going to Gan as floating bunker...Is she still there? I
served on Regent as 4th Mate with Laurie Swanson as Chief Mate, courted
his pretty daughter too! Rab Thomson - 2008-03-16 18:56:30 Certainly looks like Tony Tomkins..sailed with him many years ago..he was ex RCN submarine communicator. Steve Oatey - 2008-03-14 01:22:51 In the unnamed section photo labelled "Xmas", is the guy in the background an R/O named Tony Tomkins? Not sure of that spelling. He was ex-RCN. Dave Smith - 2008-03-10 23:25:55 Resurgent. is the 2/o to the right of JRB Kim Watts? Webmaster - 2008-03-05 10:12:59 By what seems to be a majority vote, I am going to name Bob Platt right and Rod Deller in the middle unless anyone else can offer an opinion! Dennis Harker - 2008-03-04 00:45:06 2nd thoughts - didnt Bill Dwyer also smoke a pipe? And could the Pete Anthony lookalike be Jim Ashwell or had he left by this time? So many questions! Dennis Harker - 2008-03-04 00:40:11 Resurgent Ashore - 4th from left Rod Deller, 5th from left makes me think Pete Anthony but only about 50% on that one as it is probably a bit early for him, extreme right is Bob Platt - the pipe gives it away. Dave Smith - 2008-03-03 15:53:13 Yam Sing. its Sir Tristram possibly xmas 1976 HK
Colin Evans - 2008-03-02 14:02:25 Boat Dk Bar. Far left of the picture could be John Pearson or Jack Rowe (Black Jack)?
Webmaster - 2008-03-02 10:18:49 For DS. Boat Dk Bar. Is Mr Chan behind the bar? Dave Smith - 2008-03-01 21:32:41 Yam Sing. On the left is Jimmie Mair.C.E.O. centre is Nelson ER stores, this is possibly Lancelot at a later date.
Dave Smith - 2008-03-01 19:19:50 Boat Dk. Bar. centre left Mike Fleming.extreme right. Mr. Chan,
Bryan Davies - 2008-03-01 15:26:27 In unnamed Resurgent Ashore is the one on the right a young Bill Dwyer
Webmaster - 2008-03-01 09:54:39 No it seems to be in a club ashore (probably American) but the photo is labelled Resurgent. Dave Smith - 2008-03-01 08:59:05 I dont think this is Resurgent? Webmaster - 2008-02-29 20:55:20 Thanks DS (aka SS). Steve, thats the one I thought was Rod Deller, though on reflection its perhaps a bit early for him.. Any more offers? Steve Oatey - 2008-02-29 20:46:37 Looking at the picture of Resurgent (in "unnamed" section) I thought the far right was Bob Platt. Then I looked further along and it looks more like Bob fourth from right.
Dave Smith - 2008-02-27 23:49:50 Gold Ranger2.is Mike Fleming the 4/e i relieved looks as if taken at
the Dockyard club.

Webmaster - 2008-02-14 21:18:08 Now now Richard, stop stirring it! The main website serves a perfectly proper function of spreading necessary information and being the "Official" window of the Association, it probably cannot adopt such an informal relaxed manner as this one. Also the webmaster probably hasnt as much time to play around with it as I have. Now I must get on with the garden ..... Richard walker - 2008-02-14 16:43:16 Why cant the main website be like this one!
Graham C Egleton - 2008-02-12 23:18:49 For Alex Landels - meant to contact you earlier. Trust you are well. Re the picture of Nick - I presume that he returned to Wave Ruler after leave because he left Wave Ruler with myself and John Watson in Malta at the beginning of February 1964. Lost track of him after that. Do not know if you heard any news of him after that. You can contact me direct at grayce@ntlworld.com. Best Wishes Graham E
Rab Thomson - 2008-02-09 15:40:25 Thank you David, for explanation but if it aint broke etc etc etc..
Webmaster - 2008-02-09 09:49:33 Yes Rab, this is a cheap and cheerful guestbook which doesnt allow
the posting of complete URL addresses. This is necessary because once a
post is made, I cannot delete it, so the spammers could run riot.
Rab Thomson - 2008-02-08 23:31:52 Regarding my last post. I tried to send the complete SN address but was told I might be a spammer and the system would not accept my post. ( hence missing out the www)
Rab Thomson - 2008-02-08 23:29:32 I joined Sir Galahad in Keppel Harbour Jan 70. I was the first RFA appointee and she was still with BI at that time. E.F Wardlaw (Ed) was the appeared shortly after and was appointed 2nd Eng, Chief Eng was C.K.A Adams (Ken) who transferred from B.I. as did Capt John Swan. The RFA articles were signed on 08 Mar 70. | For Peter Wright. Wave Laird spent some time in the 50s, supporting HMS Protector in Antarctica and resupplying the Falklands before many people had heard of them. She was in the first Cod War, 1958 - 1961 and was scrapped in 1970. |

| Very saddened to read the
news of Chris Smith recently passing away. I can only echo Shaun Jones
words in that he was one of the most supportive, friendly and competent
Captains that I ever sailed with too. I was with him on Sir Percivale from the end of refit late 1988 through summer of 1990 which took us through the inevitable rough time at FOST hands followed by winter exercises in Norway and then some swanning around the continent and Scandinavia (Antwerp, Denmark, Oslo, etc) until I left in Summer 1990. It was a very enjoyable 9 months due mainly to Chris being the Captain and getting the best out of every visit for the whole ship. My fondest memory is of heading westwards one Sunday evening on the way back from Antwerp when an RAF Rescue helicopter clattered alongside and asked, via VHF, if he could carrying out winching practice. Bear in mind that it was dark and tv reception was good (Chris liked his tv). We decided we would give the helo something to practice by flashing up the UHF sets in the radio room and giving him a surprise - until that point he had assumed we were a commercial ship. Chris came into the radio room asking if we had a Beaver Code or similar because he wanted to go up on VHF and tell the pilot to **** off. Unfortunately we could not find a suitable code before the helo decided we were too complicated to play with - too many radio sets - were the pilots words. Chris then happily went back to watching his tv. |

| From Shaun Jones re Chris
Smith: I was so sad to hear this news. Chris was my Captain in SIR LAMORAK (1984) and GREY ROVER (1985) when I was his Navigator. During 1985 and we enjoyed a fantastic 9 months including a trip to the USA and he was one of the most supportive and friendly Captains that I ever served under. It was wonderful to see Chris at the farewell party to GREY ROVER in 2005 which sadly was the last time that we met although luckily a photograph was taken of the 1985 “Command Team”. My thoughts go to Chris’s family. |

| Hi there, was just browsing and came across your site by pure chance. I owned and ran " La Bayuca " restaurant in Gib for 40 years so I met quite a few RFA chaps during that time. My other connection is my uncle Stan Edwards, Chief Engineer, who was in RFA all during the War, so you young fellows would not have known him, unless you're about 95 years old !! Thats all. Best regards, Johnnie |

Dick Elsey - 2007-09-14 08:22:14 |
| Its me again!! the grumpy old
'plumber' from Wimborne! My copy of "Gun Line" came last week... how sad to see only three ships in 'furrin parts' and the rest (to quote Kipling)'anging round the yards' or at least the UK; also to see that the Fort Vic. Oakleaf, and Brambleleaf have disappeared with out a wimper! (yes I know they are skulking with certain other 'old ladies' at Pompey, and then to read that all Mounts Bay could be found to do was to entertain Jimmy Saville! oh come on!!! Seriously though sculling around the UK coast seems something of a come down compared with the glory days!of the sixties and seventies!keeping the morale of everyone at a high must be difficult with out the excitement of 'going foreign' which was why I went to sea all those years ago. I won't even comment on the number of shore posts!! if any one can allay my concerns in any way please do! I've wittered on too long! regards to all Dick |

| Both these ring a bell. 14: Strings Restaurant 4 Cornwall's Parade Tel: 78800 15:La Bayuca Restaurant 21 Turnbull's Lane Tel: 75119 Neither actually in Engineer's Lane but not far off. I'll stick up a map. |

13:02:34 |
| Could this be it?? La Bayuca - also a favourite with Prince Charles and Prince Andrew... Johnnie and Tita are extremely friendly and will gladly tell you about the history of Gibraltar. The restaurant is one of the oldest on the rock, and used to be popular with naval officers until the British Navy stopped visiting Gib in the 1990's. The food is good for Gibraltar, but not outstanding. But it is about the only place with character and is worth going to. The Chicken Bayuca is good - quite like a chicken tagine, that you would expect in Morocco. Leave a Comment Theme: Other Directions: From Casemates Square, take your first left from Main Street and then first right. You'll see a sign for 'Restaurant' half way down on the right hand side. |

Dick Elsey - 2007-08-22 03:09:09 |

| Never touched it Rab! Only
pure Gozo Wine in unlabled bottles at 1s3d a time. I think the "Green Lantern" was actually just "The Lantern". See photo on my other site at www.talhandaqnostalgia.org in the Malta, Then & Now, album. Maltese wine has improved dramatically over the years and Marsovin Special Reserve is quite drinkable but not as good as Delicata Green Label. Mind you it now costs a couple of quid! DMG |

rab thomson - 2007-08-14 09:00:21 |
| Chris, Gib's Angry Friar and
the Pulverine were also well-frequented taverns. Malta brews were Hopleaf and Cisk and the famed Marsa screech-not stuff for small boys to drink. I am sure the Webmaster will confirm this. |

Chris Puxley - 2007-08-14 03:58:24 |
| Dick, if I can transport you
to one or two other locations, regularly frequented in the (g)olden
days; Gibraltar, often accompanied by George Galliano the Agent, - the Casino, the Piazza, The Fox & Hounds bar. (Memories of Watneys Red Barrel and swordfish steaks). Malta, - Green Lantern bar at the top end of the 'Gut'- all downhill from there! What was the name of the local brew in Malta? |

(Old China Hands only, need to respond!!) Not much response regarding watering holes we have known.... Does no one else remember: drinking beer , playing liar dice, and eating lamb cutlets at Conders bar in Hong Kong? (I'm sure you were there Scofe?) quite near to Jimmys Kitchen if I remember correctly? also the Russian Restaurent behind the Peninsular Hotel in Kowloon? 'Tchenkoes'?. spelling?? was its name, any one else remember it? Those were the days! also 'Winner House' of ill repute!!! |

| For Chris. The GEC Snoopy Mark 2 rig was operational (more or less) in that position in Resource by 1986 but not sure when it was fitted. I think the old Sea Slug Rig (No.8) was still there at that time though used for something else. |
|
Chris Puxley - 2007-08-07 03:47:03 |
| Can anyone tell me when the old seaslug gantries were removed from Regent/Resource and an additional rig built stbd side just abaft the accom block? I think it must have been some time soon after 1983. I would also be interested in locating photo's of certain RFA's in commercial livery after RFA service, eg Hebe/Bacchus, Brambleleaf/Pearleaf, Black Ranger and Chilean Tidepool, or when RFA's are in the throes of being savaged by ship breakers. |

| The Association Archives are
a being professionally catalogued and we hope that one day they may be
the start of a museum. However as Chris says many items still seem to disappear without trace. All we can do is spread the word to preserve whats left of our heritage. The Association HQ is expected to move south in the not too distant future which may make it easier to retrieve items from Pompey Dockyard as ships decommission. (Marine Supers are long gone! They are all Deputy Assistant Chiefs of Staff (Flexible Global Reach) or something nowadays!) DMG |
|
Chris Puxley - 2007-08-03 07:52:04 |
| Ref Dick's comment about 'mess trophies', there are a few bits and pieces at the Association HQ in Bellingham but I'm sure it will be just the tip of the iceberg. What happened to the "Tristram fox" for example? A couple of years ago I was trying to find out(without success)what happens to a ship's plans when the old ship is laid up? Are they thrown in the back of some Marine Super's locker at H.O. and forgotten? Has anyone a contact who can find out? Those sort of things should be kept for our Association archives. I managed to get a copy of a few 'Gen Arrangements" i.e. Retainer (as built), Hebe/Bacchus, Resource/Regent and Engadine, from city museums where the vessels were built. Like much of history, it's interest value is not recognised until too late. |

Dick Elsey - 2007-08-03 05:50:45 |
| For Chris Puxley: Joined the Grey just after the bump with the Okanagan, but remember the lump of fibreglass fin with a maple leaf painted on it. I think it had gone when I went back there in '79?. Years ago, I too, remember (with others) endeavouring to drink the Tiger brewery dry, with no success!! Just a thought, does any one know what happens to 'mess trophies' when ships are decomissioned? any mileage in thinking about an R.F.A. museum I winder? I think that the Beira 'bucket' is, or was in the dockyard museum at Portsmouth, but of course that was competed for by RN ships as well. I think the 'Dale boats' are represented on it. Pleased to hear that the Seacrest is still 'up and running' Rab. |
|
Chris Puxley - 2007-08-02 04:28:44 |
| For Dick Elsey - Yes, I can
remember that Grey Rover paying off party in the dives of Helensburgh
too - just! I consider myself fortunate to have been put on a train
going in the right direction. My eldest son is a WEO on Trident boats
and lives in that part of the world now, so I pass through Helensburgh
from time to time and think about those 'good ol days'. Going back to Grey Rover, were you on there Dick when the Canadian sub "Okanagan" hit us underwater? I was 4-8 OOW at the time. One of the Canadian crew has been in touch via the 'RFA Unofficially' website and was interested to hear our perspective. (We were totally absolved of blame in case anyone wondered!). He seemed to recall our corporate hospitality equally as much as the bump. In my last email I forgot to mention that whilst in Singers I was with a group of RAF types and paid a visit to the Tiger brewery. After the rapid lookaround we were in the bar and sampling the goods when I noticed amongst many other badges, one from the "Olwen". How long ago was that I wonder. |

Amys at J.B. Jack Conders in H.K. Dots. Seacrest in Whitley Bay, and the Wilcove near Yonderberry. just for starters... regerds to all Dick |

However I will need more precise co-ordinates for the Sunshine Bar as either they have changed the street names or Google's map is up the spout, so I have centered it on the Arch of Tusks. As I recall, the New Florida was further south east. And what about the Casablanca? I will also need some photos of course to plant on the scenes of interest! DMG |

Another possibility could be Wyn (Dai) Davies or Duggie (Kyushsu)
