Tugs and Salvage Vessels
After the Second World War many of the tugs and salvage vessels that were either White Ensign or on a T124 variant manning reverted to full civilian manning. Circa 1947 some of the HM Rescue Tugs and Salvage Vessels were registered as merchant ships and as RFAs - manned by Director of Stores (Navy) with operational and management in all other respects, including repair and seaworthiness, undertaken by the Director of Boom Defence, later Director of Boom Defence and Marine Services, and even later Director General Dockyards and Maintenances (Marine Services Division), later Director of Marine Services (Navy). During their careers many crewed on various yard craft, home trade or dockyard D606 agreements. In 1970 they transferred to the newly-formed Royal Maritime Auxiliary Service.(Adams/Smith)
